TRAM FARES
DISCUSSION BY COUNCIL. REASONS FOR DROP IN REVENUE. At last night’s meeting of the Town Council, Councillor Tapley brought up the subject bf tram fares and made some suggestions as to the South Invercargill section. “The question of tram-fares should be considered at. once,” said Cr. Tapley. “The subject has been brought up before and was held in abeyance until such time as the amalgamation of South Invercargill with the main borough was complete. The situation at present is that though the South Invercargill tram route is shorter than that, of North Invercargill, it has a higher fare. There are three sections on it as against two on the North line. The situation is ridiculous and something should be done right away.” The Mayor said that the whole position of fares and services would be dealt with shortly, and within one month there would be only one-man cars running. Cr. Brodrick asked what was the cause of the falling off in the revenue from the trams. The East Road services had taken increased revenue. The Mayor: Because they put the fares up. Cr. Tattersfield: The falling off is due to three reasons—the good roads that the borough has put down for cyclists, the beautiful weather, and the energetic salesmanship of Cr. Campbell—(Laughter). In any case I think that tram fares should be reduced and not increased. The matter was then dropped.
