SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. The Southland Racing Club’s Autumn meeting opens to-morrow and will extend over Thursday. The Hororata R.C.’s annual fixture and the Whangarei Racing Club’s Autumn meeting are due on Saturday. The running of a number of horses at the Oamaru J.C. meeting did not justify their owners in a visit to the south. The sum of £1620 will be distributed in stakes at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s Winter fixture on Saturday, May 19. The Wanganui Trotting Club’s annual fixture will open on Thursday next and extend over Saturday, March 31. The jumping of Red Heather on both days of the Oamaru J.C. meeting was of a high order and deserved a win on Saturday. The hurdle racer Atapo is at present in the paddock and his owner states that he is likely to remain there for some time to come. Provided all is well with him, Jovial, by Merry Moment—Sanguine, may be hard to beat in the minor steeplechases at Riverton. The very satisfactory field of nine two and three-year-olds remain in the Southland R.C.’s Juvenile Handicap, which will be run to-morrow afternoon. At the last Grand National Steeplechase meeting Jovial, who has been nominated at Riverton, displayed promising form in minor cross country races. The Southland R.C. can claim a very satisfactory acceptance total for Wednesday with 86 horses for eight races, and the first field handicapped left in the Southland Cup. The very useful Overdrawn ran badly at the Oamaru J.C. meeting on Saturday, but work and one or two races at the Southland R.C. meeting may key him up for Riverton. The glamour of King Balboa’s performances at Wingatui last week caused many people to neglect to note that Overhaul displayed improving form on Saturday. The smart three-year-old novice, Meadow Lark, who ran well at the Oamaru meeting, is by Songbird from Unawed, by Markhope —Unawares, by Gipsy Grand—Ambush, by Vanguard—Fairy Maid, an old-fashioned but stout pedigree on the dam’s side. He is a perky young Songbird. When the mail to hand last evening left Australia the New Zealander, Limerick, was galloping well on the Sydney tracks, hence he probably went out at a short price for the Rawson Stakes, the event which he won at Rosehill on Saturday. It is pleasing to observe that Spearmaid has been left in the Southland Cup to-mor-row, as the Greyspear mare looks like developing into a very useful open company performer at from one mile to ten furlongs and the ranks of this class in the home province will benefit by recruiting. At the V.A.T.C. meeting at Caulfield on March 17 the Orrong Two-year-old Handicap was attractively won by a colt called Balmerino, by All Black—Anna, who is owned by Mr J. Edmond, probably identical with a sportsman who used to race horses in Southland from the late H. Goodman’s stable. The Melbourne youngster event referred to was worth £650. Balmerino is spoken of as a colt of more than average ability. The New Zealand-born horseman, M. McCarten, has had quite a run of success in Sydney of late, and it is safe to say that he acted as Limerick’s pilot when the son of Limond won at Rosehill on Saturday. It almost looks as if McCarten developed special form to be ready for supreme action when Limerick came to hand. With three days’ racing at Riverton furnishing valuable stakes and looming just ahead it was considered in the north that the acceptances for the Southland R.C.’s meeting might not prove up to the mark, but the lists totalling 86 acceptors published this morning afford the best answer. The eight events set for to-morrow promise to provide keen sport and wide wagering facilities, and what more could be expected ? As a matter of fact, the acceptances are really much more encouraging than was expected by the officials of the S.R.C. and people intimately connected with the game, and this should at least spell a successful fixture. One of the events for which a curtailed field was feared was the Flying Handicap, and it is now satisfactory to point out that nine runners are promised, with at least six horses likely to command solid support. There was also some uneasiness in connection with the prospects for the Southland Steeplechase, but in the light of the recent Otautau Steeplechase contest and some results of the past the local cross-country event is replete with promise. The hack races, too, have proved attractive to owners, as there are 12 in the Roslyn Hack Handicap (6f.) and 13 in the Stewart Island Handicap (7f.), while 18 acceptors for the New River Harness Trot (2m.) is more than satisfactory.

That good and game horse, Rob, has almost outlived his days of usefulness as a racehorse, as he is now so badly affected in the wind that he cannot foot it with the company with which he has been used to compete or see out a reasonable distance. He was never in the picture at the Oamaru J.C. meeting last week. Hard Prince failed to repeat his form of the opening day of the Oamaru J.C. meeting when it came to the Pacific Hurdle Race at Wingatui on Saturday. He won the Autumn Hurdles the first day like a very useful jumper, but never looked like getting up to the leaders on the second day. He nearly came down at the second obstacle, however, and this ugly incident may have and probably did take all the steel out of his efforts—it was also against him that when W. Cooper, who made a great recovery, got him straightened up, the leaders were far away and travelling very fast. The two batten races at the Oamaru fixture, by the way, were run at a very fast clip for Wingatui, as on each occasion the time was 2min 46sec, as against the 2.48 standing as the record on the books of the Dunedin Jockey Club, and credited to Projector. The track last week was very fast, and it may b 7 said that Projector carried 11.4, as compared with Hard Prince 9.4, and Red Heather 10.4 respectively in their winning essays. W’hen he has done with the batten-crossing game Hard Prince may be found useful with steeplechase fences in front of him. There was a strong wind against the contestants at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday when the Otagoowned Jolly Pet won the leading event, March Handicap (harness), £350 (2m.) in 4.41. The Coldstream Bells—Jolly Pet gelding won the race from end to end and going away. He carried the confidence of his connections and the many friends of the Messrs Jolly Brothers of Cromwell and Dunedin respectively will be pleased to learn of their success with a horse of their own breeding. What made the victory all the more acceptable was the fact that Jolly Pet was backed and beaten at the recent New Brighton T.C. fixture when he met with some interference. For the Farewell Handicap at the Oamrau J.C. meeting on Saturday, Gay Sonnet was made a better first selection than Overdrawn to the extent of about one hundred and forty chances and her support was justified as she ran home an easy winner from Lucy Locket. Overdrawn ran well for six furlongs and was then beaten, but the race should do him good. It is

some time since the Dunedin-owned gelding was seen at his best, and it will be interesting to see how he shapes at the Southland and Riverton R.C. meetings. The wellperformed Paper Money—Droski gelding is a smart all-round performer when stripped at his best and his loss of form must be disappointing to his admirers.

It appears that by some means or other the amount of the fine inflicted on J. Walsh in connection with the Waikoura Trot Handicap at the Oamaru J.C. meeting on Friday last appeared incorrectly in print here. When Needles was relegated into second place and John Dee awarded the stake Walsh was fined £lO for unnecessary use of his whip, whereas the amount was reported to be £2. The entries for the minor events at the Canterbury J.C.’s Autumn meeting number 192, as compared with 197 last year. The ex-Invercargill pacing mare, Lingfield, who now races in Mr G. J. Barton’s name from W. J. Tomkinson’s stable, was fourth in the March Handicap, won by Jolly Pet, but there is said to have been no merit in the performance. The Author Dillon —Gianella mare has not been successful since she left the south, but she will probably turn up trumps one of these days. She is only a young performer yet as light harness racehorses go, and she is a nice pacer, who stays fairly well and can command a fair turn of speed. CANTERBURY RACING NEWS. SATRAP GOES TO AUCKLAND. EULALIE GALLOPS A GREAT EASTER RUSH. JUMPER WHIPCORD IN WORK. (Special to the Times.) Christchurch, March 26.

We are having beautiful Autunm weather. Dull mornings and bright days, while just a sufficiency of rain has fallen to keep the turf in splendid order. Trotting meetings at Wellington generally attract a large number of enthusiasts to the capital city. Saturday’s meeting was an exception as very few people went north. Elzear was well supported here for her two engagements at Wellington. The best she could do was to register a third and a second. As the times put up by the winners of the two events were on the slow side it is evident that something must have happened to Mr G. Barton’s fine trotter to prevent her from winning. Satrap will leave in a couple of days to take his place in the Leger field at Ellerslie. The racing this gelding had at Trentham did him good. He will leave here for Auckland a very fit horse. He, however, is not a really good one, and he will get beaten if he meets something that has improved since last they met. V. Alborn took Cannonball and Vesuvius to Wellington. He was very confident in their ability to win, and they were backed accordingly, both on the course, and by stop-at-home bettors. As so often happens the good things failed to produce a bonus. Alborn had ideas of going further north when he left here. What he will do now it is hard to say. Eulalie was responsible for a smart gallop over seven furlongs on Thursday morning. It was a good performance, but not at all sensational. In fact it was no better than one or two of the -filly’s performances prior to her departure to Trentham for the Challenge Stakes. The result of Thursday’s gallop was a rush of anti-post bettors to get on the good thing for the Easter Handicap, and now she is at a very short price indeed. In some cases there is “no money.” W’hen Eulalie won the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton last November she carried 8.1 while Crown Area who finished a •good second to her carried 8.3. In the Great Easter Handicap Eulalie has 8.8 and Crown Area 8.3. On paper the weights favour Crown Area The extra furlong may also be on his side. It certainly will not give the filly any advantage. It must be noted, however, that since their good showings in the spring, neither Eulalie or Crown Area have done much good for their owners. A few ’chasers—such as they are—are now in work at Riccarton the latest to put in an appearance is Whipcord. He is back in F. P. Claridge’s stables. Big and lusty he still goes very short behind. J. McCombe evidently intends staying in the North Island until after the Easter meetings. He has not entered anything for the C.J.C. Easter meeting. He has some promising looking yearlings to break in as soon as he comes home. Three of them are by Chief Ruler. They have been well done. Rapier has not quite recovered from his efforts on the hard tracks at Trentham. He has been kept at easy pacing, but H. Nurse intends starting him in the Great Autumn Handicap. Considering his performances the Greyspear horse is not harshly treated with 9.9. C. Emerson has been offered the ride, but at present is not enamoured of it. Battle Colours must have ricked himself slightly while running in the Waimate Cup. He has been slightly lame in the shoulder ever since. This may have been the cause of his very poor showing. Magna Chart a is doing all his work under a heavy pull. Trainer T. H. Gillett is losing faith in the big son of King John. He hopes, however, that the speedy gelding will find the sharp turns at Hororata all to his liking. R. Emerson who was operated upon for gall stones a few* weeks ago, is out of hospital, and feeling much better than he has done for years. He has resumed charge of his team. F. C. Porter returned from Auckland a week ago. He is still using crutches, but reports that his damaged leg is rapidly getting stronger, and that he will be able to dispense with the supporting sticks very soon. He is very cheerful, and thinks that he will be riding again before long. Moorland has gone to the West Coast, and is being trained by Messrs Donnellan and Shanahan. He ran his first race for his new owner on Saturday. Te Awhina has been allowed to drop out of the Great Easter Handicap and has been entered for some of the minor events at the C.J.C. Easter meeting. This course appears to be a wise one as the filly has still to win a considerable amount before she is out of hacks. First Sight is bowling along well in his work. He was given a let up after the Midsummer meeting, and is on the backward side at present. One more win, however small, will put him into open company. Footfall is improving slowly, but very slowly. He is much lighter than when he has shown his best form. Trainer G. Murray Aynsley knows that this gelding is not as well as he has been on occasions, but he does not think he will need to be to win the Great Autumn Handicap. F. D. Jones will ride him. Pink Note was one of the horses engaged in the Great Easter double that was not expected to drop out at the first acceptance. He had been fairly well supported for the double by the public, and his defection was a most unpleasant surprise to many. G. Murray Aynsley has paid up for Chide in the Champagne Stakes, but he has also entered him for the two-vear-old handicaps. He considers Chide a useful gelding, but not really high class, or thoroughly seasoned. On these counts he paid up in the classic, intending to watch how the other Champagne candidates progress before coming to a final decision, as to what race he will run the youngster in. Some trotting enthusiasts at Rangiora have an idea of forming a local club. At a meeting held a few days ago it was decided to ask the Rangiora J.C._io form a trotting track on the outside of their course proper. The Rangiora J.C. at present, are not averse to trotting races being held on their course, but the idea of cutting up their track does not appeal.

Shirley is due to arrive from the north early this week. She is reported as improving. Margaret Birney is giving her owner, trainer an uneasy time of it. Troubled with a bad joint all the season she has hit herself on several occasions of late. Quarterdeck has got over the lameness that prevented her from racing at Trentham, and is doing some solid work. A batch of yearlings have arrived at Chokebore from Stonyhurst. Among them are several by Winning Hit. On looks these are a very satisfactory lot. They are the first of his gets. Stormy is getting through the tasks allotted him in a most satisfactory manner. It is only a matter of this gelding standing up to a reasonable preparation, for him to win good races, and that before very long. WESTPORT JOCKEY CLUB.. MEETING CONCLUDES. STEEL BAR LEADING WINNER. ' Admiral Royds, speaking at the Eastern Counties Rugby Union dinner, said a strong feeling existed in the Committee that the union themselves should take up the question of a New Zealand tour; indeed, the question was at present being seriously considered. Admiral Royds hoped in the event of a favourable decision the counties and clubs would make an especial effort to see the Mother Country worthily represented in the great game.—A. and N.Z. CYCLING. RACE FAKED. GERMAN COMPETITORS SUSPENDED. Cologne, March 24. The German Cycling Union having unearthed a scandal has suspended many competitors for faking the recent six-days’ international professional cyclists’ race to Berlin. It declared that the only honest competitors were the Frenchmen, Dambst and Lacquehay, who were twice previously sacrificed on the German tracks in 1928 by conspiracies on the part of the other ' competitors.—A. and N.Z. and Sun.
