URBAN VITAL STATISTICS

REDUCTION IN DEATH RATE. BIRTH RATE AGAIN DECLINES. Full statistics of births and deaths for the whole Dominion for the year 1927 are not yet available, but those for the 14 urban areas, which contain about 50 per cent, of the total population, have been issued by the Government Statistician. In previous years, it has been found that the urban areas invariably have a somewhat lower birth rate and somewhat higher rates of deaths and of infantile mortality than the Dominion as a whole. The number of deaths registered in the urban areas last year was 6393, comprising 3456 males and 2937 females. The total is 76 lower than in 1926, male deaths having been 75 and female 5 fewer. The urban death rate was 8.96 per 1000 of population, as compared with 9.33 in 1926, and 8.85 in 1925. The deaths included 748 children under five years of age (792 in the previous year). Of these 589 (in 1926, 593) were under one year of age. The live births numbered 13,053, as against 13,334 in 1926, a decrease of 281. The rate was 18.29 per thousand, as against 19.24 in 1926 and 18.95 in 1925. Last year’s urban birth rate is the lowest in recent years.
