HALF-CASTE ABORIGINES

INCREASE IN AUSTRALIA. Sydney, January 24. According to the return issued by the Commonwealth Bureau of Census, the number of full-blooded aborigines last year was 29,942, as compared with 29,296 in 1926, but in 1925 the number was 62,394. The figures relating to the half-castes point to a steady increase in their number, averaging about 1,000 yearly, the number last year being 15,468. About 10,000 fullblooded natives are in European employ, and there are upwards of 4,000 half-castes in Queensland. There is a marked tendency to gather the aborigines into the Government Mission stations, and only about 14 per cent, lead nomadic lives.—A. and N.Z.
