SIX KILLED
TROUBLE IN SHANGHAI. Shanghai, December 30. The holidays were marred by a renewed crime wave with foreign and Chinese victims. A pitched battle occurred outside the Settlement between a band of eight armed robbers and the Chinese volunteer police. There were 30 casualties and five gunmen and a British policeman were killed. A British harbour ferry was pirated in broad daylight and five foreigners who were on board were robbed and a factory pay roll looted. Two attempts to kidnap children were frustrated.—A. and N.Z.
