EASTERN DISTRICT GAMES. MATAURA WINS PREMIERSHIP. The weather conditions were far from favourable for the Eastern District Rugby fixtures yesterday, and as a result of the heavy rains experienced since Monday the grounds were in a sodden state. Chief interest centred in the senior grade match between Mataura and Edendale, and a win to the former leaves it the premier team for the 1927 season. This matcl was played at Mataura, and although a fairly large crowd turned out to watch it the game was spoiled by the ground being covered with mud and surface water. Similar conditions prevailed at Gore for the fixtures played there. MATAURA v. EDENDALE. Edendale kicked off against the wind, but the home side gradually worked play into Edendale territory. From a line-out near their own 25 Edendale secured, but Calder charged down a clearing kick. Scott secured and scored for the home team. —Mataura 3, Edendale o. Shortly after Edendale were penalised 35 yards from their goal-line, and Shrimpton’s kick rested on the bar before going over. —Mataura 6, Edendale o. Mat aura continued to press and Shrimpton kicked another penalty goal from a short distance out. —Mataura 9, Edendale o.—■ A heavy snowstorm interfered with play, which was suspended for a time. On resuming Mataura carried play into Edendale’s 25, where Mailey started a good passing rush in which Clearwater and Calder were prominent. The former finished the movement by scoring cleverly. No goal resulted. —Mataura 12, Edendale o. The Edendale forwards then took a hand and set up a determined attack which ended by L. Marshall crossing for the visitors’ first try. —Mataura 12, Edendale 3. Clearwater, who was playing a great game, further improved the home side’s position by crossing beside the posts. Scott converted. —Mataura 17, Edendale 3. Edendale made repeated attacks on the Mataura line, and eventually L. Marshall scored his second try. The kick at goal failed. -—Mataura 17, Edendale 6. The closing stages were played in semidarkness and amid a heavy fall of snow. No further score resulted. Mr F. O’Kane controlled the game. WYNDHAM v. ALBION.
