CANADA LAGGING

OVERSEAS SETTLEMENT. CONCERN AT DISPARITY. Vancouver, June 1. The report of the British Overseas Settlement Committee, made public a few days ago, draws pointed attention to the disparity between the number of immigrants Australia, despite her much greater distance, is receiving compared with Canada. Since the scheme was put into operation, in regard to financial assistance to settlers, Australia has received more than half the settlers under the scheme, while Canada has received less than 30 per cent The figures for the various Dominions are:— 1925. 1926. Australia 22.527 32,732 Canada .. .. .. 8.809 21,344 New Zealand .. .. 8,097 11,795 South Africa .. .. 126 232 Total 39,559 66,103 New Zealand, proportionately to population, is absorbing these settlers at a much higher ratio than the other three Dominions. The Press of Canada, reviewing the lagging position of this Dominion, as disclosed by the figures, is asking what is wrong with the immigration policy of the Dominion.
