ARTS AND CRAFTS
THE MAORI BOARD. ANNUAL MEETING. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, July 9. The annual meeting of the Maori Arts and Crafts Board was opened by the Hon. R. F. Bollard who said that while Rotorua had investigated the question of a site for the Maori arts and crafts school it might be possible to acquire the control of a model pa at Whaka and make it the show place for the board. The upkeep and decoration of such a pa would be ideal work for the school of art students. The necessary weaving and textile arts could be taught at Ohinemutu. Regarding finance, he said the board must economise these hard times. Unfortunately they had started in lean years but that would not prevent a good foundation. The board resolved to inquire regarding the renting of a building at Rotorua in which to hold the first art school at an early date. Also to approach the Tourist Department for 10 acres north-east of the bath house as a manae for public receptions. The question of appointing an instructor was referred to the committee. The board acepted Mr Bollard's gift- of £25 to provide £5 for five years for a student in the arts school.
