DEBATE WITHOUT TEMPER
It is to be hoped that those of our readers who take part in the controversy over the interpretation of the Bible will read carefully two letters of protest we publish this morning. We have no desire to restrict the discussion, but it is obvious that no good can be served by the display of temper and the introduction of personal abuse. The argument that has been proceeding is not new. It has been convulsing the Christian world in various continents and unfortunately it has led to extreme bitterness. That is the explanation of the anxiety of many newspapers to avoid anything that will provoke a debate on the Bible. Recently, in a moment of carelessness, we accepted a Biblical reference without discovering its terms and for the resultant insult to the Rev. J. Chisholm we apologise. The incident, however, should be taken by all our correspondents as a warning that unless the discussion can be prosecuted without personal abuse it will be brought to an immediate conclusion.
