COUNTY SUBSIDIES
ALTERATION IN SYSTEM SOUGHT. REPRESENTATIONS TO PREMIER. (Special to the Times.) Wellington, July 8. Subsidies to counties is the subject of a question to be asked by Mr. J. R. Hamilton, who gave notice to-day to ask the Prime Minister if he will have the law altered so that the subsidies at present given to county councils will place all counties on the same basis and so do away with the present unfair and unjust system whereby some counties receive only 9d. in the £ while others are enabled to get up to ten shillings in the pound. Mr. Hamilton explained that it was not intended that the Government should be asked to make any larger total contribution than they are at present making but by lowering the maximum and raising the minimum to the same level, no extra money would be required. An allocation of subsidies in this way could not but meet with the approval of all fair minded men who believe in a fair and square deal.
