WAR LIABILITY
COUNTRY’S DEBT TO EX-SOLDIERS. (Special to the Times.) Wellington, July 7. "A contingent liability upon the balancesheet of war,” is how Mr A. M. Samuel (Ohinemuri), described the case of the returned soldier in New Zealand. "Until this liability is wiped out,” he said in the House, "we are still in their debt. We must honour the promissory note we have given on their behalf. The duty of the State did not cease when the soldier returned from the war. It will never cease till the last pension is paid and the last soldier is fairly treated.” While on the subject of pensions, Mr Samuel said that there was no legislation at present to deal with the case of women with a sick husband and no one to look after the family. He asked for a pensions amendment to deal with this.
