BRITISH TARIFFS

COMMONS CONSIDERS FINANCE BILL. (Rec. 10.25 p.m.) London, July 7. In the House of Commons, in committee on the Finance Bill on Dr. Edward Dalton’s motion to repeal the sugar duties, Mr. P. J. H. Hannon urged that the output of British refineries should enjoy an Empire preferential duty. The Hon. R. McNeil reported that it would cost tha country £11,500,000 per year. The motion was rejected by 245 votes to 128. Mr. F, A. MacQuiston moved to reduce the duty on whisky from 72/6 to 30/-, This would permit whisky to be sold at 6/per bottle instead of 12/6 which would mean thrice the consumption. The motion was rejected without division. ,—A. and N.Z.
