LADIES’ HOCKEY

SATURDAY’S GAMES. UNION (3) v ROSEDALE (0). In the second round of the ladies’ hockej competition at Queen’s. Park on Saturday afternoon Union defeated Rosedale and Collegiate defeated Invercargill. The weather was ideal for play and t large number of spectators watched the progress of the game from the side line

The ground was in fair order. The Union-Rosedale match was played on No. 2 area, the following representing the rival clubs:—

Union —D. Hawke; M. Clifford, E. Insall; V. Daplyn, B. Morton, R. Geddes; W. Clark, L. Clifford, M. Clarke, A. Conley, D. Insall.

Rosedale—A. Pratt; A. Fearn, K. McDonald; L. Wilkes, R. Pratt, M. West; V. Smith, R. Wells, L. Baird, M. Davis, I. Hardy.

Union took up the running from the bully, but were held by the Rosedale backs for a time. Miss Davis in clearing gave possession to Miss Morton, the Union centrehalf. She passed up to Miss L. Clifford who in turn relinquished possession in favour of Miss Clarke, who, after beating the opposing backs, goaled with a stiff shot to the corner. Union 1, Rosedale 0. Rosedale then took up the attack but could do little in face of the opposition and it was not long before play once more centred in their twenty-five. Miss Baird, who attempted to institute a counter attack was tackled by Miss M. Clifford, the ball passing to Miss Daplyn. Miss Clarke secured, but on being tackled sent out to Miss D. Insall, who raced down the line and passed in to Miss Conley who goaled with a neat shot which just beat the Rosedale goalie, Miss Pratt.

The last goal of the game was secured several minutes before half time. Miss Geddes secured and sent her forwards away. Miss Clarke on being challenged passed to Miss Insall who eluded the opposing backs and sent in again to Miss Clarke who found but little difficulty in finishing off the movement by goaling. Union 3, Rosedale 0.

No further goals were secured owing to the good defensive work of both sides. Play ranged up and down the field and as the scores in the second half indicate, the teams were particularly evenly matched. Mr R. J. Surgenor was the referee.

COLLEGIATE (12) v INVERCARGILL (1) Playing on No. 1 area Collegiate defeated Invercargill by 12 goals to one. Misses Mary Mclntyre (8) N. Thomas (3) and Madge Mclntyre (1) scored for Collegiate and Miss B. McLauchlan for Invercargill. Mrs Murray was the referee.
