FIRE BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Invercargill Fire Board was held yesterday morning, Mr C. J. Broad presiding over the following members: Messrs R. N. Todd, E. B. Pilcher and W. Stirling. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT. The Superintendent, Mr F. Simpson, reported that during the month of June, 14 calls had been attended as follow: five dwellings (one outside fire district), five chimney fires, one pump house (waterworks), one photographic studio (involving boot shop), and two false alarms (justifiable). Although the figures for the year ending June 30 were not complete, to date the brigade had attended a total of 94 calls of all classes during that time. This was an increase of 33 over last year’s total. All station duties and routine drills, testing, etc., had been carried out, and all plant and equipment was found to be in first-class order. RECOMMENDATIONS.

The General Committee recommended that the following remits be sent forward for consideration by the conference of Fire Boards:—

(a) That section 71 of the Fire Brigades’ Act, 1926, be amended to provide for hotels and boarding houses being fitted, with fire escapes.

(b) That a general superannuation fund be established under the National Provident Superannuation system. (c) That a central fund be created for the payment of all conference expenses including expenses of delegates attending such conference.

(d) That the Fire Brigades Act, 1926, be so amended to give fire engines the right-of-road when attending fire calls. (e) That provision be made in The Fire Brigades Act to give the superintendent the necessary authority to order all trade refuse to be removed from passages, yards, etc. (f) That the appointment of borough representatives to Fire Boards be in May of each alternate year instead of in February as laid down in section 23 of the Fire Brigades Act, 1926.

(g) That the Government be urged to consider the advisability of installing automatic alarms in all Government risks.
