Last season Durham carried off the second-class championship, going through the season without a defeat. J. Carr, J. Cook and A. L. Howell—three professionals—secured averages of 11.48, 12.30, and 15.91 runs per innings respectively. Carr was the best all-rounder in the team, as he had a batting average of 28 runs per innings, but T. K. Dobson, with a batting average of 32 and a bowling average of 13.60, did almost equally good service. The best batting performances last year were those of M. Nichol, who claimed an average of 37.75 for twelve innings, and Weight, whose average for fourteen innings was 34 runs.
