The Calm arrived on Sunday at 11 a.m. There was a sharp frost at the port yesterday morning, and the wharf generally did not thaw during the day. Notwithstanding that there were four steamers working at the port, the supply of labour being ample and some men from Invercargill did not get work. The closing of the freezing works and stone quarries has increased the number of local w ate raiders available. The Calm worked about 500 tons during the day and sailed for Dunedin at 8 p.m. The Kartigi left for Melbourne at midnight, practically a full ship, including 2,200 cases of frozen fish. The Waikouaiti arrived from Sydney yesterday morning, and after landing hardwood timber and general and loading outward cargo, chiefly oats, sailed for Dunedin at 5 p.m. The Kurow, with general cargo, is due at Bluff on Thursday. She will sail the following day for Dunedin, Lyttelton, Wellington and Auckland. The Moeraki, which is due at Bluff from northern ports on July 5, will sail the same day for Melbourne direct. The Waihemo, which left San Francisco on June 4 for New Zealand porta, incluuing Bluff, is due at Wellington on June 30. She then proceeds to Lyttelton, Timaru, Dunedin and Bluff, being due here about July 10. The City of Khartoum is due at Bluff this week to discharge general cargo shipped at New York. The Karetu is expected to leave Sydney to-day for Lyttelton, Dunedin, Oamaru and Bluff, being due here about July 1. After taking on general cargo she will sail for Sydney direct. Messrs Tapley and Company advise that the Calm is due at Bluff from Wanganui on June 30. She will be despatched on her return voyage, via Wellington, the same day. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s lonic is due at Bluff on July 9 with 1,200 tons of general cargo for discharge from London. She will load 29,000 freight carcases of meat and 4,000 crates of cheese; also general cargo for London, sailing from Bluff on July 14 for Lyttelton and Wellington to complete loading. She is scheduled to leave Wellington at daybreak on July 27. Messrs Dalgety and Company advise that transhipments ex the Mamari are coming forward by the Oreti about the end of this week. GERMAN SHIPPING PROFITS. After two dividendless years, the North German Lloyd resumes the payment of a dividend—6 per cent.—the same as that of the Hamburg Amerika Line. The management of the Bremen Company state that the trend of business in 1926 makes it possible to hope for better results. The improvement is largely due to the favourable development of the passenger business to the United States, while the betterment of the freight market will also have contributed to the increased revenue.

SELF-UNLOADING VESSEL. Considerable interest at Home was taken in the demonstration at Walker in April of the special unloading gear with which the steamer Valley Camp is equipped. She is the first self-unloading vessel to be constructed in England, and has been built by Messrs Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson, Ltd., to the order of Mr J. Playfair, of Midland, Ontario, for service on the Great Lakes. Mr Leatham D. Smith, of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, U.B.A, is the patentee of this new gear, which briefly, consists of two drag scrapers working in kunnels under the ship’s floor. The cargo (coal, grain, ore, sand, and the like) is fed . inside the tunnels and the scrapers discharge

it on to a single belt conveyer coming above the deck, and it then proceeds shorewards by means of an overside conveyer boom 85ft long, which is able to discharge at a maximum distance of 70 feet from the ship's side to an elevation of 30ft above the ship's deck, at a capacity of 600 tons an hour. The equipment has a particular advantage in being able to discharge at a point where no dock gear is installed or to tranship direct into a ship’s hold. TRANS-PACIFIC CARGO STEAMER MOVEMENTS. The following movements are announced : The Hauraki, from Vancouver and San Francisco, was due at Auckland on the 18th inst., and proceeded thence to Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney.
