DEADLY TYPHOID
CANADIAN EPIDEMIC OVER 4,000 PERSONS STRICKEN DISEASE TRACED TO DAIRY COMPANIES (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) Ottawa, June 17. The Provincial Government, having conclusively traced the typhoid epidemic to certain dairy companies, has ordered them to be closed and took complete control, thereby stopping the spread of the disease, but not before a drastic toll. During March, April and May, 4,259 residents of Montreal were stricken and of these one tenth succumbed. Many thousands of dollars were also lost due to the bad tourist traffic. Typhoid started the first week in March and it is claimed there were 1,812 victims during the month. The number decreased to 791 in April, with 233 deaths for the two months. There was a fresh outbreak towards the end of April, which caused 1,656 new cases in May with 107 deaths. The figures for the past week average only ten cases daily.—A. and N.Z.
