CANTEEN FUNDS
METHOD OF DISTRIBUTION. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, June 16. The secretary of the Canteen Trust Fund, replying to a question by Mr Jordan, M.P., whether any consideration is being given to the distribution of the Canteen Funds according to the service on similar lines to the war gratuity, says that if such a distribution were decided upon it would only average 30/- for each of the 112,000 men of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force while the cost of the distribution would be very considerable. Thousands of those who would receive it would not need it and to those who were really in need the amount would be negligible. The experience of previous wars showed that the real need of such a fund was many years after the end of the war. A portion of the interest earned was now being used for the education of the children of deceased and disabled soldiers. The board was considering the question of using the remainder of the interest to relieve unemployment among ex-soldiers under the administration of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. *
