PIECEWORK

POSITION IN AUSTRALIA. ARBITRATION COURT JUDGE FAVOURS SYSTEM. Sydney, June 15. In the Commonwealth Arbitration Court Chief Judge Detheridge referring to piece work said he was in favour of it. The conditions that obtained in industry to-day compared with other countries could only be preserved if payments by results were adopted. The judge said he had a very strong objection to degrading the first class man in industry as he believed in giving a first class man first class wages. The Australian Workers’ Union representative replied that the workers in Australia would not oppose piece work so long as they were guaranteed that the continual cutting of the rates by the employers would be stopped.—A. and N.Z.
