LAWN TENNIS
DAVIS CUP. FRANCE BEATS ITALY. Rome, June 14. France beat Italy in the Davis Cup tie by three matches to two. De Morpurgo (Italy) beat Cochet 7—5, 5—7, 6—l, 6—4, and Lacoste (France) beat De Stefani 6—3, 6—B, 6—l, 6—3.—A. and N.Z. After his excellent display against Lacoste, it was not surprising that De Morpurgo accounted for Cochet, though the young Frenchman made his older opponent play hard for victory. Lacoste dropped a set to De Stefain, but his in the other three were big. Italy is evidently a force to be reckoned with, for few would have anticipated that the all-conquering Frenchmen would drop two matches. Had they not won the first two singles, it would have been Italy, not France, that would travel to the United States for the challenge round.
