TOWN BOARD. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting, held on Monday evening, was attended by Messrs Wesney (chairman), R. Scatter, E. Harrington, Collett, F. 11. Hili, M. C. Mclvor and Mrs Cuppies. In reporting on the conference of public body representatives with Southland members of Parliament, Mr R. Scatter paid a tribute to the work done by the Southland League in the interests of Southland, considering it to be a real live body. An estimate of the receipts and expenditure for the year was submitted by the clerk. A circular letter re tow'n-planning was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs. The clerk was directed to explain the over payment of unauthorised expenditure noted by the Auditor-General. It was decided to pay for the electrical installation of the old Town Hall, the work having been authorised prior to the present lessee’s lease being taken. Notice of the intention of the Southland Power Board to strike a general rate and a separate rate over a defined area was forwarded by the secretary.—Received. The Health Officer’s monthly report was received, whilst the ranger reported having impounded 7 cattle and 2 horses during May. Gazette notices and plan showing alterations to boundaries of electorates were received. G. Bone wrote complaining of the unsatisfactory nature of the rubbish removal service through the ashes being blown from the open cart when they were being removed.—lt was resolved that the necessary cover be made for the contractor’s dray. Mrs Cuppies reported that the citizens’ ball had proved very successful; the piano had been bought and paid for, and a balance of £6 8/1 was available to pay for other improvements to the hall.—Received, Mrs Cuppies being accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The surfaceman was directed to attend to necessary work in Clitheroe street. It was decided to request Mr McAfee to furnish a plan of connection with the main sewer to next meeting. It was resolved that two linen copies of the cemetery plan be procured, one for the sexton, and one for the office, to record the positions of burials in plots. The Supper Room Committee was authorised to inspect and decide if a tank should be erected, Mr Scatter recording his protest against this. Accounts amounting to £242 5/8 for Town Board, and £22 18/1 for the Domain Board were passed for payment. “BRING AND BUY FAIR.” * Thirteen ladies attended the meeting to consider the furtherance of arrangements for the above fair, which is to be held in the Town Hall on Friday, June 17, to raise funds for the local school. Mr G. Sinclair, chairman of the committee, and Mr W. B. Rowan, secretary, were also present, and stated that it was absolutely necessary to augment the funds to enable the committee to carry on. Mrs W. Porteous was appointed supervisor, and the following stall holders were elected—Tea-rooms, Mesdames Duncan, Blaikie, Brooker, Griffiths, Misses Lock and Donnan; Produce and Cakes, Mesdames W. Smellie, F. J. Collie, J. Scatter, G. Sinclair and A. A. Liddell; Christmas Tree, Mrs Buchanan and Miss Stroud; Jumble Stall, Mesdames Porteous, Stevens, Chandler and Saxelby; Pets, Mrs Chisholm and Miss Ryan. It was decided to hold a fancy dress procession for children in the afternoon, and to give a prize for the best-dressed child, which would be decided by vote. EUCHRE TOURNAMENT. The attendance at Monday night’s euchre tournament was the largest so far this season, nineteen tables being occupied. The prizes went to Miss M. Sounness and Mr James Chamberlain, while the consolation prizes were awarded to Miss T. Scatter and Mr G. Bulman. The prizes for the highest aggregates over the six nights were on view at the hall the same evening, the ladies’ prize being a tea-set and the gents a leather suit-case. TELEPHONE EXCHANGE. The Post and Telegraph Department officers on Monday commenced to install the Otautau Exchange in the new wing recently built.
