In handing over the shield to the captain of the visiting team, the president of the Invercargill Club, Mr A. E. Smith, heartily congratulated them on their win. They all knew that the donor of the shield, Jimmy Laing, one of the finest sportsmen who ever stepped on a course, would be pleased that the shield was circulating among the clubs, as he had intended it should. The Gore players had scored a meritorious win and every member of the Invercargill Club was pleased that the shield should go to a club consisting of such thorough good sportsmen. In acknowledging Mr Smith’s congratulations, the captain of the Gore team expressed his appreciation of the action of the Invercargill Club in putting in a team that would give them a chance of annexing the trophy. It was such sportsmenlike actions that did so much to cement the feeling of good-fellowship between the various clubs.
