ECLIPSE OF THE MOON

TOTAL ECLIPSE TO-NIGHT. There will be a total eclipse of the moon visible throughout New Zealand this evening. The earth’s shadow will make its first contact with the moon at four minutes past five o’clock but, as at this hour it is only the penumbra of the shadow that the moon enters, there will be but the slightest diminution of her brightness. At 6.13 p.m., however, she will enter the umbra! part of the on-creeping shadow. This will be seen to gradually encroach over the lunar disc until 7.43 p.m., when totality begins, and the moon gets no light directly from the sun at all. This phase lasts for about 22 minutes. Then, just as the shadow came, so will it pass off, the order being reversed, the umbra leaving the moon at 9.36 and the penumbra at 10.45 p.m. The whole eclipse, therefore, will be an event lasting approximately 5| hours, the most interesting portion of which will be the interval of three hours and 23 minutes during which the moon is crossing the umbra, viz., ,6.13 p.m. till 9.36 pjn.
