MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR
SCOW FOUND ASHORE. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, June 14. What appears to have been an attempt to steal a scow and get her out of port was discovered this morning when the Pahiki, owned by McCallum Bros., was found on the rocks at Devonport on the opposite side of the harbour from the city. The scow had been laid up and was securely moored at the wharf this side of the harbour. A light had been hoisted in the rigging, but was not burning this morning, while all the sails had been set and were set when the vessel was found ashore. The weather being fine the hullsustained no damage. The Pahiki was fully equipped for a sea voyage and could have reached Australia except that there were no provisions on board. Beyond these facts the affair is a mystery and is occupying the attention of the police.
