A LONELY RIDE
CYCLIST’S UNENVIABLE EXPERIENCE. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 13. A. C. Sutherland, a professional cyclist, who left Auckland at 9.15 a.m. on Thursday and arrived here the same time yesterday morning, had bad weather in the latter part and was fatigued on arrival. Heavy rain came on after reaching Otaki and the rider lost his way several times. At Tawa Flat, no great distance from Wellington, he was frozen and crawled under a bush for shelter. He saw a light and found a hut with two men, but they had no food. Pacers picked him up at times, but mostly he was by himself and felt the loneliness more than anything. It is estimated his actual riding time was 53 hours. He reached Hawera at 10.30 p.m. on Friday, Palmerston North at 5.30 p.m. on Saturday, then rode through the night and a cold head wind and rain till he arrived. Sutherland says he would not do the journey again for £l,OOO.
