ARAPUNI WORKS

GENERAL STRIKE OVERTIME RATES IN DISPUTE CONFERENCE REFUSED BY COMPANY (Per United Press Association.) Te Awamutu, June 13. AH the workmen engaged at the Arapuni electrical works declared a general strike at midnight on Sunday. The dispute arises out of the payment for overtime. It is stated the employers should pay double rates for all overtime in excess of four hours and their neglect to do so gives rise to the present dispute. A mass meeting of the men held yesterday reached the decision to declare a general strike. J. Kelly, president, and E. Lake, secretary of the union, went to hold a conference with the Armstrong Whitworth representatives, but the conference was refused by the company which stipulates that the men must return to work before any consideration is possible. Mr Handman, the Company’s manager at Arapuni, is at present in Auckland. Meanwhile work is at a standstill.
