N.S.W. CHAMPIONSHIPS HORTON SECURES DECISIVE VICTORY DUNCAN GOES DOWN TO APPERLEY (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, June 13. The weather was fine in the morning for the first round of the match play in the New South Wales amateur golf championship, but two heavy showers of rain fell during the afternoon. Duncan and Apperley had a battle royal. The New Zealander went out in 35 and was two up, but took three putts on the tenth green and from thence onward his putting was weak. Apperley won the tenth, eleventh and sixteenth, but Duncan squared the match at the seventeenth, only to lose the eighteenth. In the afternoon Duncan won the first, but lost the third and fourth. He was two down at the ninth and, though he won the tenth, Apperley had the upper hand and won 3 and 2. Horton played against Thorn and won the third, but Thorn squared the ninth at the fifth. Horton then won the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth, and maintained his form and won five up at the conclusion of the morning round. In the afternoon ho sparkled out in 36 and eventually won nine up and eight. He meets Russell, of Victoria, to-morrow. Whitton played fine golf against Macfarlane and the New Zealander was seven down at the conclusion of the morning round, and gave up the match. A feature of the play was the defeat of the present champion, Morrison, by Sturrock. The results of the day’s play was as follows : Whitton defeated Macfarlane (resigned) ; K. Harrison defeated Bettington 4 and 3; Nigel Smith defeated Coonan 3 and 2; Apperley defeated Duncan 3 and 2; Russell defeated Wines 6 and 5; Horton defeated Thorn 9 and 8; Sturrock defeated Morrison 3 and 1; Walter Smith defeated Murdoch 2 and I.—A. and N.Z.
