DAVIS CUP
ITALY SUCCESSFUL IN DOUBLES. Rome, June 12. In the third round of the doubles Demorpurgo and Destefani (Italy) beat Cochet and Brugnon (France), 6—4, 6 —4, 6 —4. —A. and N.Z. The defeat of the French doubles champions, Cochet and Brugnon, by Demorpurgo and Destefani will come as a great surprise. It will be remembered that the Frenchmen proved too good for their famous compatriots, Lacoste and Borotra, in the finals of the doubles championship of France, and their defeat by the Italians was never contemplated. Demorpurgo is evidently playing great tennis, for he took Lacoste to the fifth set. .Though the Frenchmen should win the match, it will not be surprising if the Italians capture one of the two remaining singles. AMATEURS TO FORESAKE STATUS. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) London, June 13. Mr Cochran announces that he has come to terms with five leading British amateur tennis players to become professionals after Wimbledon and to play in Mlle. Lenglen’s tour. He is trying to induce Suzanne to play a singles match against a man for the first time in her career. —A. and N.Z.
