FREE KINDERGARTENS

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Free Kindergarten Council was held in the Gala street Kindergarten yesterday. Mrs Cruickshank presided in the absence of Mrs F. Burwell, over the following members:—Mesdaines Pryde, Campbell, Chewings, Denton, McKeever, Fraser, Grant, Wilson and Walker. The possibilities of holding a jumble sale this month were discussed and it was decided that arrangements be made and that a special meeting be called later in the month to decide upon a definite date. Mrs Chewings proposed that Mesdaines Strang and Carman be appointed to fill the vacancies on the council. The motion was seconded and carried. A letter from Miss Bathans, of Dunedin, asking that representatives be sent to the refresher courses for teachers and council members to be held in Dunedin on Wednesday, was received. After some discussion it was decided that it was impossible owing to the short notice received and to the unsuitable train arrangements to send a representative. It was further decided that the secretary should write to Miss Bathans explaining this, and asking that next year the refresher course be held, if possible, in the term holidays. Notice was received that Mrs Walker had been appointed to the council as a representative of the Gala street Kindergarten. REPORTS. GALA STREET. Miss King of the Gala street Kindergarten reported that the roll number was 26, and the average attendance for the month 21.1. The weekly euchre parties were continuing with great success. A social and dance had been held some weeks ago and was a most successful function. Two of the fathers had repaired the hobby horses at the Kindergarten', and had put handles on all the tin buckets. A mothers’ and children’s afternoon was to be held this week. Mesdames Campbell, Denton, Crooks and Moore had visited the Kindergarten during the month. SOUTH INVERCAR,GILL. Miss Hamilton, Directress of South Invercargill Kindergarten reported that the attendance during the month had shown signs of improvement. The roll number was thirty-eight and the average attendance twenty-eight. The committee had arranged a euchre party in Victoria Hall for June 1, and were very grateful with the result. Mr and Mrs Barnett, of Centre street, Georgetown, had given an evening last Friday for Kindergarten funds. Thanks were due to Mrs Burwell for a large parcel of woollen crotchet mats for the children to sit on. Mesdames Chewings and Strang had visited the Kindergarten during the month. LIDDEL STREET.
