Fine weather prevailed for the matches in the Northern District on Saturday. The ground in some places was not in good order on account of the recent frosts. The Lumsden team continued its unbeaten record by defeating Balfour at Balfour by 18 points to 3. The teams were— Lumsden—U. Crosbie, Cunningham, N. Crosbie, A. Reidy, Wellman, Massey, Johnson, C. Tomlin, Small, Earl, G. Tomlin, J. Ogilvy, L. Ogilvy, Gibson, Richards. Balfour—Savage, L. Scobie, S. Keown, McGregor, H. McGregor, Thomas, Stickles, Alexander, Keown, A. Scobie, Attewell, McGregor, Olsen, Mcßae. In the first spell Lumsden attacked strongly, and for the first quarter of an hour had the home side on the defence. Some good passing rushes by the home side were witnessed, but the defence proved equal to the occasion. Balfour were awarded a penalty but Keown failed with the kick. The home side began to attack and the forwards though lighter than their opponents were faster and were playing a good game. The only score in this spell was got by N. Crosbie. Johnson received from the scrum and passed to Massey, who passed to Wellman, the last-named after a good run passing to Crosbie who scored in a handy position. Tomlin goaled and the spell ended 5 nil in favour of the visitors. In the second spell Stickles replaced Attewell at half-back for Balfour, who received most of the ball from the scrums, but were not able to put it to advantage owing to faulty handling by the backs. Alexander and Stickles had attempts at penalty goals, but were unsuccessful in | obtaining points for the home side. The first score in this spell was got by Wellman, who intercepted a pass by the Balfour backs, and after an exciting run scored near the corner. Tomlin kicked a poster. The next score came shortly after. Tomlin received from the scrum and dribbled past McGregor, and gathering up the ball passed to Wellman, who scored his second try. Tomlin goaled. An exhibition of dribbling rushes was given from one of which Ogilvy received and dived over the line to score for the visitors. Tomlin goaled. The home side was not yet done with, ’ and the forwards attacked strongly. Faulty | handling by the Lumsden backs spelt danger for the visitors, and Alexander scored the only try for the home side from a forward rush. He failed to convert the try and the game ended —Lumsden 18, Balfour 3. j The home side put up a good fight and a good game was witnessed, the score being no indication of the play. For the winners Wellman played well, and showed that he had returned to his old form, while D. I Thomas was the outstanding player for the losers. Cleland was not available for the Lumsden side and the Balfour team missed i the services of Rutter. Mr G. Sproat re- ! fereed the match. LUMSDEN Bv. RIVERSDALE. j Playing at Lumsden, the Riversdale team was defeated by the Lumsden A team by ; 8 points to 6. Lumsden B—D. Ogilvy, L. Patterson, F. ' Small, G. Rodgers, D. W’right, F. Crosbie, 1 C. Rodgers, G. Senior, R. McAuley, R. Patterson, M. McKenzie, G. Patterson, R. McDowell, H. McGregor, L. Brotherston. Riversdale—Lenon, Clearwater, Shallard, Parker, Ferris, Wright, Kelly, D. Kelly, P. Shallard, F. Shallard, White, Ryan, Dawson, McNeil, McAuliffe. The game proved a fast one and was interesting from the spectators’ viewpoint. ; Lumsden had the better of the game in j the first spell and the backs handled the j ball much better than their opponents. A try was scored by C. Rodgers for the home j side. The opposing full-back fielded the ball from a kick by the Lumsden side, but in his attempt to clear mis-kicked, and good following up enabled Rogers to score. Ogilvy failed with the kick. Towards the end of the spell Riversdale attacked, but no further scores resulted. In the second half Lumsden attacked from the commencement, and although the forwards were the lighter pack it was securing the ball from the scrums. The backs however lacked combination and individual play was the result. About half-way through the spell Senior received the ball from the ruck and after beating several opponents scored under the posts. D. Ogilvy goaled. Towards the end of. the game the weight of the Riversdale forwards began to tell on their opponents and the home side players were kept defending. F. Shallard kicked a good goal from a penalty for Riversdale and just before time W. Shallard scored in a good position as the result of a dribbling rush. F. Shallard failed with the kick, the game ending—Lumsden 8, Riversdale 6. For the home side Senior in the forwards and Rodgers and Crosbie in the backs were the pick. For the visitors White and W. *
