SATURDAY'S TRIAL GAME. SOME DASHING PLAY WITNESSED. On Saturday at the Showgrounds one of a series of trial matches with the object of selecting the team to represent Southland against the Canadians was played. Play at times reached a high standard, while it was at all times fast and interesting. Considering the fact that the players were drawn from different clubs, they fitted together very well and the combination shown was really good. There was an excellent attendance of spectators. The teams lined out as follows: A team (Maroon and Blue):—Morrison; Maxwell, Cathcart; Drysdale, McKay, McMurdo; Reddington, Smith (captain), Todd, Pinkney, Dy mock. B team:—Hill; Tourell, B. Scandrett; Howden, Campbell (captain), Woodham; Fitzpatrick, Kendall, Heyricks, Greaves, Cullen. Play opened brightly, the Maroon forwards going right through, but Tourell sent them back, Fitzpatrick carried on and sent to Heyricks but McKay brought the movement to a halt and opened out to Smith, the latter passing to Reddington who centred for Todd to drive past. The kick off went well down and the Black forwards carried on but Maxwell proved safe. He cleared to Pinkney who with clever footwork made a lot of ground before passing to McMurdo. The latter had raced up and receiving from Pinkney sent on to Todd. Sandy tricked the defence . and beat ELill with a daisy trimmer. —A Team 1, B Team o. A lively few minutes then kept Cathcart and Maxwell busy and Drysdale coming back relieved the situation. The latter was fitting in nicely with. Smith and Reddington, the three appearing to have a perfect understanding. Drysdale again came into the picture a minute later. He tricked Woodham nicely and passed to Reddington. The latter drew Scandrett and slipped the ball to Drysdale who crossed a beauty. McMurdo received and lobbed one into the goal-mouth. Todd was there and his header struck Campbell on the shoulder and went into the net. —A Team 2, B Team o. The Maroons were having all the best of the game and Hill in goal was kept busy but he was on his mettle and made some I remarkably good saves. The Blacks then ! got away, Campbell opening to Cullen but Maxwell dispossessed the winger. Campbell I blocked the full back’s clearance and gave to Kendall but Cathcart relieved. The I Blacks had livened up considerably but ; found the defence very solid. Half-time I was called without change in the score, i On the resumption of play there were some alterations. The goalkeepers were changed round; Pinkney went to left half for the Maroons, McMurdo going to inside left. Drysdale 'retired and was not replaced, leaving the Maroons one short. The A team attacked from the jump, but Campbell and then Tourell cleared. Campbell was opening up well to his forwards but McKay was proving too good for Heyricks so the half back changed his tactics. He took the ball well up, drew McKay, and sent on to Kendall. The latter wasted no time and from well out sent a stinger that hit the post and flew into the net. —A Team 2, B Team I. The A’s were missing Drysdale, and McKay and Maxwell were called on for a great deal of extra work. The Blacks continued to press and Howden let Kendall away. After a nice run the latter beat Cathcart and again scored. —B Team 2, A Team 2. The Maroons then had a turn, McMurdo and Dymock combining nicely but the latter’s centres were going behind. They kept at it and McKay sent through to Todd. The latter fooled the defence badly and gave Smith a clear run but a hard drive from him hit the bar and rebounded into play. Woodham booted out to Greaves and the latter transferred to Cullen who streaked down the line and crossed to Kendall. The inside right shot in a good one that Hill deflected round the post. The corner was cleared by Maxwell who passed to McKay. The latter drew Campbell and sent on to Smith. The latter made a good run and kicked through. Reddington cut in and sent in a hard grounder that ; Morrison stopped but the ball curled away from him and rolled over the goal line. —A Team 3, B Team 2. The Maroons continued to be aggressive and the Pinkney-McMurdo-Dymock trio was causing the defence a lot of worry. Pinkney held Kendall up and bolted upfield. He swung the ball right across to Reddington who centred to Todd. The latter was blocked and transferred to McMurdo. From well out the Corinthian man let fly and scored with a real beauty to the top of the net. —A Team 4, B Team 2. — Stung by this reverse the Blacks set up a hot attack but the Maroon defence held and time was called with the scores unaltered. Mr G. E. Pollock gave every satisfaction as referee. CANADIANS DEFEAT BULLER A TWO GOAL WIN. GOOD EXHIBITION OF CODE. GROUND IN MUDDY CONDITION. (Per United Press Association.) Westport, June 11. The weather for the Buller-CanadiEjn match to-day was cold and showery and the field in bad condition. Nevertheless both teams played a hard, scientific game, giving a good exhibition of Soccer. Canada won by two goals to nil. At the outset, Canada attacked and within ten minutes of the commencement of play, Gibson shot a goal, Canada 1, Buller nil. Through obstruction by Canada, Buller’s goalie put Buller on the attack and Newman after good play had a shot which went wide. A free kick to Buller put them on the offensive but Canada soon carried play back to Buller’s territory. Chapman, for Buller, carried play to Canada’s end but it was soon returned, Canada setting up a hot attack, but Archibald, Buller’s goalie, who was playing well, saved cleverly. Canada at this stage were pressing Buller and Gibson was injured and carried off. A minute or two later, however, he returned to the field. The visitors’ goal was threatened but Tait gave relief. Shortly before half time, by brilliant play Gibson received the ball and played it in tbe net. Half time sounded with the score——Canada 2, Buller 0— On the resumption of play the Canadians attacked strongly but Archibald saved well. Play oscillated up and down the field for some time, both sides trying hard to score but the defence was too sound. The local team continued to press but unfinished play spoilt a good opportunity. A goal again looked likely but Newman was well stopped. Archibald again prevented tbe visitors from scoring from a free kick. Buller rushed play upfield but Canada returned and the game ended with the score——Canada 2, Buller 0— IN OTHER CENTRES. AUCKLAND. Thistle (4) beat Northcote (0). Ponsonby (4) beat Shore (1).
