HOCKEY

SATURDAY COMPETITION. UNION’S BIG SCORE. Playing conditions were almost ideal for the continuation of the Hockey Association’s Saturday competition at Queen’s Park on Saturday afternoon. The weather was perfect and the ground, though inclined to softness, was in very good condition. The principal clash was between the Union and Rosedale elevens, and although Union gained a decisive win, an interesting game eventuated. Union, however, had much the better of the game throughout the first half, although their opponents always showed that they were not a force to be taken lightly, and the five goals which fell to Union’s lot before the interval were all the result of hard effort. Rosedale on many occasions showed out on attack, but their finishing efforts were not equal to the solid defence put up by the “Golds.” Miss B. Morton was the first to shoot successfully for Union, and thereafter the game was punctuated with goals at regular intervals until half-time. Miss M. Clarke soon added another goal from a fine concerted movement, while Miss Instone followed with another almost immediately. Thereafter Rosedale rallied and held the game in their opponent’s territory with Miss Davis sending a hard shot over the posts. Give and take play followed with the game gradually veering in favour of Union, and Miss E. Instone was able to add another goal at the end of a pretty combined effort. Miss M. Clarke sent in a hard shot which beat the Rosedale goalie immediately after the bully-off, and when the half-time whistle sounded a little later Union were five goals up. In the second spell Union continued to dominate play though Rosedale made strong bids for success and were perhaps a little unfortunate in not scoring more often than they did. Miss Davis eventually netted the ball for Rosedale after Miss Hardy had failed in two successive shots which looked easy, but before the final whistle sounded Miss W. Clark had added another three goals to the Union tally, the game ending—Union, 8; Rosedale, 1. Mr R. Surgenor refereed. The teams were— Union—Misses D. Hawke, R. Geddes, M. Clifford; V. Daplyn, B. Morton, V. Pringle, D. Insall, A. Conolly, M. Clarke, E. Insall, W. Clark. Rosedale—Misses I. Colquhoun; A. Fearn; K. McDonald; M. West, L. Baird, L. Wilkes, I. Hardy, B. Savory, M. Davis; R. Wells, V. Smith. COLLEGIATE’S EASY WIN. In the Collegiate-Invercargill match both teams were short of players. Collegiate had 10 players whilst Invercargill had only eight. Collegiate’s win was therefore hardly unexpected’ though the Invercargill eight made the opposition work hard for their victory. The losers played a most creditable game under the circumstances, and did well to limit the Collegiate score to seven goals. The goalkeeper for Invercargill, Miss J. Dickie, a young player, put up a remarkably solid defence. Miss Winsloe shot no fewer than five goals for Collegiate and Misses K. Murray and N. Thomas added one each. Mr E. H. Battin was the referee. IN OTHER CENTRES. WELLINGTON. Karori A (5) beat Hutt (2), Karori scoring three goals in the last nine minutes. Training College (3) beat Karori B (2). Wesley (4) beat Wellington (1). Varsity A, a bye. Ladies’ hockey results:—? Swifts A (3) beat Training College (0). College Old Girls A (3) beat ’Varsity (0). Huia A (7) beat Huia B (0).
