MARRIAGES

OFFICIATING MINISTERS. DISTRIBUTION OF WORK. Of the 10,680 marriages registered in 1926, Church of England clergymen officiated at 2940, Presbyterians at 2810, Methodists at 1034, and Roman Catholics at 1247, while 2107 marriages were celebrated before registrars. “The above figures,” remarks the Government Statistician (Mr Malcolm Fraser) in the monthly abstract of statistics “must not be taken as a true indication of the religions of the parties married, as it does not necessarily follow that both parties are members of the Church whose minister performed the ceremony, and persons married before registrars may belong in greater or lesser proportion to any of the denominations.”
