RAINBOW TROUT.
To the Editor. Sir, —“Heckumpeckum’s” letter in a recent issue of your paper is a highly interesting one, and the suggested extensive stocking of rainbow trout is worthy of decided approval. It is undoubtedly generally admitted that satisfactory day fishing is becoming most difficult to procure in Southland, and the introduction of these splendid sporting species in a stream handy to Invercargill would be a decided asset to the local Acclimatisation Society. Of the rivers suggested for the purpose, the Makarewa stream should have first consideration, because of its extensive source of food supply, and also on account of its availability for the humble patron of Isaac Walton, who has to rely on the push bike as a means of locomotion. Visions arise of comfortable trouting excursions to the Makarewa river, with good prospects of “moving” rainbow, on days that would be classed as “blank” ones for the brown trout. It is to be hoped that the society will make every effort to give effect to “Heckumpeckum’s” sensible suggestion.—l am, etc, “CREEL.”
