DAIRY CONTROL
REFERENDUM SUGGESTED. The suggestion that another referendum be taken on the question of Dairy Control was contained in a remit from the Mataura branch to yesterday’s Provincial Conference of the Farmers’ Union. The remit, which was eventually withdrawn, was as follows— “ That this conference of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union is of the opinion that in the interests of the dairying industry the Government should take another referendum on the Dairy Control Act.” Mr T. Major said that his branch was of the opinion that the only satisfactory way out of the present impasse was to take another referendum. There were many aspects which could of course be considered, such as the cost, for instance, but it would be unnecessary to go into the matter extensively. Mr Niederer urged that the farmers should be careful not to be inconsistent in the matter, and referred to the fact that conferences in the north had failed to pass resolutions on the same lines as the Mataura one. Mr Brash, secretary of the board, would soon be visiting the province, and he ventured to say that after farmers had heard him they might alter their views on the matter. — (Hear, hear.) Mr P. Arnott said that the present function was not a conference of dairymen and suggested that the remit be withdrawn. With the permission of his seconder Mr Major consented to this course, stating that perhaps it was not an opportune moment to bring such a matter forward.
