MOTOR FATALITY

CHARGES OF RECKLESS DRIVING. MISTAKEN IDENTITY ALLEGED. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 10. When William John Walling, a carrier aged 43, appeared on remand charged with having recklessly driven a motor car and having caused the death of Mrs Telfer last Friday near Johnsonville, when a private car was allegedly forced over a seventyfoot bank, Mr Perry, for accused, on account Df reports that had been made in the Press took the unusual step of making remarks before the case was heard. It was to the effect that Walling was in no way responsible for the accident. Either the pursuing car got the wrong number or the number of Walling’s car by mistake. Walling did not know anything about the accident until informed by another motorist who passed him about a mile past the scene of the occurrence. Walling turned back and helped in the work of rescue. The next he knew about the affair was at four o’clock next morning when he was arrested. Walling was further remanded on £2OO bail.
