It was decided to forward the following remits:—

SOUTH ISLAND SHIPPING. “That in the interests of the proper development of the Dominion’s trade and tourist resorts, this conference of South Island Progress Leagues draws the attention of the Government to the necessity for adequate steamer services between Australia and the South Island. The conference is of the opinion that New Zealand will never receive its fair share of trade and tourist traffic until a service similar to the old weekly Melbourne service is restored, and urges the Government to co-operate with the Union Steamship Company in the restoration of this service by providing an adequate subsidy to the company.” MILFORD SOUND. “That this conference of South Island Progress Leagues congratulates the Minister of Tourist Resorts on his decision to have a modern accommodation hostel erected at Milford Sound and respectfully suggests that the work of building be expedited as much as possible. In connection with the popularisation of this portion of the Southern Lakes District the conference urges that the provision of telephonic communication between the Lake Te Anau Hotel and Glade House and also a new launch to replace the present unsuitable boat on Lake Te Anau be given the favourable consideration of the Government.” FORESTRY FOR UNEMPLOYMENT. “That this conference of South Island Progress Leagues considers that for the object of relieving to some extent the unemployment throughout the country the State Forest Service should extend its operations in the various districts where suitable planting land is obtainable and where forestry work has been curtailed this year on the plea of shortage of finance.” SOUTH ISLAND MEMBERS. “That this conference of South Island Progress Leagues appreciates the action of South Island members of Parliament in forming a South Island Members’ Committee last year for the purpose of helping to co-ordinate South Island interests and trusts the committee will continue to function during the coming session of Parliament.” AUSTRALIAN TOURISTS. “That this conference of South Island Progress Leagues is of the opinion that the attention of the Minister of Tourist Resorts should be drawn to the necessity of a more vigorous campaign in Melbourne and Sydney in the interest of South Island tourist resorts.”
