NATIONALIST ADVANCE CONTINUES. (Rec. 7.15 p.m.) Shanghai, June 8. A thirty-six hour battle against Shantung .troops at Kaingsu and Shantung resulted in the Nationalists capturing Hanchwang, and making their first entry into the Shantung province. Owing to the superior strategy of the Nationalists, the Shantungese were doomed to defeat, but they put up a remarkable defence behing strong fortifications, until the Nationalists’ aeroplanes systematically bombarded Hanchwang. A Shantungese regiment mutinied, whereupon the commanding General surrounded most of the mutineers, a large number of whom were shot immediately or fell beneath the executioners’ swords. Others fled panic-stricken, —A. and N.Z.
