PEACE TREATY
LANGUAGE OF CONVENTION TEXT. VICTORY FOR GERMANY. (Rec. 7 p.m.) Geneva, June 9. The German Government has been endeavouring to upset the article in the Peace Treaty which provides for only English and French texts of the conventions. The Germans have proposed that the Labour Office should prepare authoritative translations in any required language. There has been much opposition to the proposal as apart from introducing a new language, there is the obvious danger of reconciling the texts in the various languages with the English and French texts, with the risk of mal-interpretation and consequently varying the methods of carrying into effect the provisions of the conventions. When the vote was taken there were 58 in favour of the German proposal and 42 against it. The Australian workers’ delegate voted in favour of the German proposal.—A. and N.Z.
