FRUITGROWING
NECESSITY FOR INTENSIVE CULTIVATION. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 8. The New Zealand Fruit-growers’ Federation to-night presented Senor Bidone, Con-sul-General of the Argentine in New Zealand, with a travelling rug as a token of esteem. Speaking at the function, the Hon. O. J. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, expressed the opinion that the fruit guarantee should be continued for some time at least. He also stated the Government was prepared to help in every way possible. He emphasised the necessity for intensive cultivation and considered apples and pears as the main fruits. He thought the local markets were not sufficiently developed and looked forward to the time when the Dominion would be able almost to supply herself with fruit without resorting to importations.
