To the Editor. I Sir, —In reply to the suggestions regardI mg the above yards appearing in your issue I of Wednesday, I have to advise you that it • has always been the custom to draw lots for which auctioneer shall select the starting point for both fat cattle and fat sheep, with the restriction that it shall be at one I outside corner. In regard to the question of every firm I having their own pens, this matter has I been under discussion between the directors I and the firms for some time past, but as yet no decision has been come to. —I am, etc. D. CUTHBERTSON, Secretary. I SANDY POINT DOMAIN AND FLAX. , To the Editor. II Sir, —I am disappointed that more has I not been heard of Councillor Robertson’s very sensible suggestion regarding planting flax on our borough endowments, especially by way of creating suitable work for the unemployed. Afforestation may be all right but as a sound investment flax is much preferable, whefe the land and surroundings are suitable. The borough has a splendid asset in Sandy Point endowment already well planted in parts in flax. There are at least 500 acres of good flax on the 4,300 acres, which has just been re-let for another term of 10 years (too long) at a very small rental which by the way should have been advertised better to make the best bargain for the borough. Fortunately the present lessee is not putting any cattle on it, which would ruin a valuable flax plantation. I would suggest that on this property more flax be planted. The young plants are available on the spot and there is no fencing required as three sides are natural boundaries and the fourth side a good wire fence. This property is a great asset already for this town and great things can be done with some more flax cultivation at the same time making reproductive and congenial work for the unemployed.— I am, etc., RATEPAYER.
