MINISTERIAL. The Prime Minister stated yesterday that during the absence of the Hon. W. Nosworthy from New Zealand, the Hon R. A. Wright, will administer the portfolios of Postmaster-General, Minister of telegraphs and Minister of Immigration, states a Wellington Press Association message. The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. R. F. Bollard) would take over the legislature of Tourist and Health Resorts. Government Life, State Fire, and Public Service Superannuation Departments. Mr Coates himself would attend to the External Affairs portfolio.
The death is announced of Mr Walter Henry Armstrong, aged 83, one of the oldest members of the legal profession in Auckland.
Dr. John Cairney, associate professor of anatomy at the Otago University, has resigned his position following his appointment as medical superintendent , of the Hawera Hospital. Word has been received from the Registrar of the University of New Zealand that Miss Louie Robertson, of the Otago University, has been awarded the Tinline Scholarship in English for 1927. Mr. V. H. Potter, M.P., announces that he will contest the new electorate of Auckland South at the next election, and Miss Melville will contest Roskill, Mr Potter’s present seat, as a Reform candidate. —Press Association telegram. Mr. L. O. Atkinson arrived in Auckland on Saturday last in his official capacity as secretary of the New Zealand Football Association. His trip was made in order to meet the Canadian football team, which arrived in Auckland on Monday by the Niagara.
Dr. Kenneth Ross was a passenger from Dunedin for Wellington yesterday to join the New Zealand golf team to play at the New South Wales championships. Mr E. J. Hocking, captain of the Otago Golf Club is also accompanying the team. Both golfers expect to return to Dunedin three weeks hence.
The death is announced of Mr Matthew Hargreaves, aged 93, by a Nelson Press Association message. He landed in Nelson in the first month of the settlement, February, 1842. Deceased was probably the oldest member of the Friendly Society of New Zealand and has been associated with the Loyal Howard Lodge Oddfellows since 1853. At yesterday’s meeting of the Bluff Harbour Board the retiring chairman (Mr C. S. Longuet) welcomed the two new members, Messrs W. Hinchey and W. A. Ott to the board. Proceeding, the speaker voiced his thanks for the courtesy, kindness and consideration he had enjoyed from all* members during his tejrm as chairman, whilst he also expressed his appreciation of the assistance given by the board's staff. The help and co-operation of the resident member, Mr W. B. Dixon, said Mr Longuet, had been of especial value to him and he was glad to know that his services would still be available to the board. All the members of the old board had had a thorough grip of all matters which had come before them, and special consideration Ld been accorded on all occasions, the members generally having done credit to the district and justice to those who had return, ed them. The two new members of the board, added the speaker, were possessed of considerable public body experience in Southland, and altogether the board as at present constituted was one of considerable administrative experience, with a keen regard for the interests of the province. Messrs Hinchey and Ott suitably acknowledged the welcome extended.
