“ADDING TO HIS INCOME"
PUNTER CONVICTED. BETTING WITH BOOKMAKER. (Per United Press Association.) Dannevirke, May 9. Cases arising out of the recent raid on premises occupied by Alfred Vivian Whitta at Christchurch were heard before Mr S. L. P. Free, S.M., in the Dannevirke Court today, when Percy John Barton admitted being with Whitta on February 8, 1927. The police said as a result of the raid in Christchurch certain documents were seized by the police, amongst them being one which went to show that defendant had bet with a bookmaker. When interviewed by the police defendant readily admitted it. Mr Blakiston, for accused, said he was a blacksmith in a small way. He was a widower with eight children and had made the bet apparently with the idea of augmenting his income. He asked for a light penalty. His Worship said he did not know any more illusory way of adding to one’s income than by betting on horse-racing. Defendant was liable for a penalty of £lOO. Seeing this was the first case in the district he would fine him £5 and costs 10/-. Kenneth Matheson, similarly charged, was likewise fined.
