THE HALF-HOLIDAY

WAS DOUBLE VOTING LEGAL? • Ever since election day the town has been rife with rumours regarding the halfholiday. At first the omniscient ones knew on the most unimpeachable authority that Saturday had been carried by two votes. When that delusion was dispelled, they returned to the attack by stating that steps were being taken to upset the result on the ground that double-voting had taken place. For several days this rumour floated round town. Then it evaporated. It came back in a condensed form on Saturday, however, i and although those who ought to know best state that no steps have been taken 1 in the matter, there are many who think otherwise. They contend that on such a question no elector has a right to cast two votes. It has been admitted that many did cast a vote in Invercargill and one in South : Invercargill but whether steps have actually been taken to prove the legality of j this double voting remains to be seen.
