TUATAPERE NOTES
R.S.A. EVENING. (From Our Correspondent.) On Friday, April 29, members of the Tuatapere branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association paid a surprise visit to the home of one of their comrades, Mr C. H. Dawson. A very pleasant evening was spent with song and story, and later Mr J. Harper, president of the association, presented Mr and Mrs Dawson with a reversible rug and a set of aluminium saucepans as a small present from the returned men. He wished them every happiness and hoped they would slay long in Tuatapere. Other speakers were Mr A. Prentice, Mr G. McLeod and Mr H. Gifford, all of whom referred to the work Mr Dawson had carried out for the association and of his genial nature and willingness to assist any worthy cause. HOLLYBURN HOCKEY CLUB. A meeting of the Hollyburn Hockey Club WKo h°ld on Monday evening, Mr T. Ballantyne (president ) in the chair. The following were in attendance: Mesdames Laurie, Lobb and Stoneman, Misses E. Dent, D. McKerchar (secretary), M. Laurie and K. Breen. The delegates’ report from the Western District Sub-Union was received. It was agreed that home matches be played alternately on the Domain, Tuatapere, and the grounds at Te Wae Wae. Arrangements were made for a euchre party to be held in McLeod’s Tea Rooms on May 10. A vole of thanks was passed to ■ Messrs S. Laurie, T. Ballantyne, G. Turner, L. Butterfield and W. Stoneman for preparing grounds at Hollyburn and Tuatapere. WESTERN STAR 4 v HOLLYBURN 0. The Hollyburn team travelled to Clifden on Wednesday where they were defeated by Star by 4 goals to nil. Two goals were scored near the end of the first spell and two in the second. Hollyburn reached their opponents’ circle several times but the defence was too strong for the attacking forwards. Mr T. Ballantyne controlled the game. Twenty minutes after the commencement of the match Hollyburn’s left wing, Miss D. McKerchar, received a nasty cut over the eye from a ball off the stick of Star’s full back. Mr B. Brookes conveyed the injured girl to Tuatapere where she was attended by Dr. Gillies. A true sporting spirit was shown by the Star team who supplied a player to make up Hollyburn’s number, no emergency being available. WAIAU WELFARE SOCIETY. The monthly meeting of the Waiau Welfare Society was held on Thursday when j Mrs C. Duncan presided over an attendi ance of the following:—Mesdames BenneI worth, Curow, Duschnitz, Laurie, Lobb, • McCullouch, Tippett and Stoneman and Miss | Kokay. After the usual routine business the ; provision of a croquet lawn was further I discussed and the secretary authorised to i apply for the lease of a railway reserve. | The president welcomed Miss Kokay as I a new member of the society. I A vote of thanks was passed to those members who had sold poppies on Poppy I Day. PUKEMAORI HALL OPENED. ' The official opening of the Public Hall at j Pukemaori took place on Wednesday eveni ing, Mr Adam Hamilton, M.P., performing I the ceremony. In his remarks Mr Hamilton congratulated the people of the district on the erection of such a splendid and well equipped building. It would be an asset to • the district and showed progress. I A concert programme which followed was I appreciated by a large audience and 100 . couples’took part in the dance.
