The Forbury Park Trotting Club Winter meeting opened in fine weather with a very strong, cold wind prevailing throughout. There was a fair attendance, including a large number of visitors from the south. The track was in excellent order, but the wind pressure was against the racers in the home stretch. The racing was very interesting, except in the trotting events, which were both practically confined to a couple of the leaders. Southland owned horses won the first three races in the book, but in subsequent events had to accept defeat. For the Bayfield Handicap, Arctotis was first selection carrying two hundred and twenty-five chances more than Peter Boy, with Nourmahal about seventy supporters as next favourite. At the start Arctotis and Peter Boy began badly, and soon lost all chance of success. Over the greater portion of the journey Katute showed the way, with Kerrwood Bell always in steady warm pursuit. From the far turn Katute’s victory was loudly proclaimed, but she could not get far away from the Southlander. Half-way down the stretch Katute was going strongly, but Kerrwood Bell came fast, and in an exciting finish got up to win at the break of a long neck from Katute, with Merry Peter fifteen lengths off third, while Jock Bingen, Nourmahal and Hawkesbury’s Pride were next in that order, but the first two horses had the remainder well beaten. Walsh drove a very fine race behind Kerrwood Bell and pipped Katute (J. Bryce) on the post. Although the winner broke within a few strides of the post, the tangle made very little difference to the result. The first and second selections made poor displays, and were never prominent, Peter Boy in particular, missing throughout, while Arctotis never displayed the speed he possessed when owned and trained in Southland. Genevieve (S. Todd) showed early pace. W’atersong finished last. A protest against the winner for breaking twentyfive yards from the post was dismissed. As a matter of fact the break took place in the last few strides. For the Domain Handicap the New Brighton trained Asset (J. H. Clark) was an easy first selection, carrying four hundred chances more than Slump (S. Todd) with Nelson McElwyn about five hundred and seventy supporters off in third place, while Chimer was about one hundred and forty friends away next. Hector’s Own and Red Shiner got left, tangling badly.. Asset drew out to lead nearly all the way. At the far turn the last time round Asset was closely attended by Robert Bell, Nelson McElwyn and Slump, with Wenlo moving up at the home turn. Slump was beaten in the home stretch, and a great finish took place, Asset, Robert Bell, Wenlo and Nelson McElwyn almost in line. On the post Nelson McElwyn won by a head from Wenlo, with Robert Bell a head off third, just in front of Asset, then Lee Bingen and Slump. It was a fine race. W’alsh drove a very* clever race behind the winner for the deserving Gore owner F. Wallis, Junr., while Nelson McElwyn paced very solidly on the firm clay circuit. The runner-up, Wenlo, (Cathedral Chimes —Roseray) stayed on particularly well over the last two furlongs. Slump paced a fine race to the straight. No Fear showed out early and looks like a useful pacer. In the Beach Handicap Desborough (J. Bryce, Junr.) carried nearly two hundred chances more than Queen’s General, with Author Jinks fourteen supporters off third fancy, while Hoon Hay was twenty friends away fourth selection. At the start Queen's General and Tommy Direct failed to leave the mark correctly and lost their chances. Jock’s Pal began well and led to the straight, but got tangled and lost his place, Jazolock going on from Mountain Chimes, First Toll, and Desborough. At the far turn Mountain Chimes had assumed command from Jazolock, with Author Jinks moving up fast. Mountain Chimes led into the straight, but Author Jinks joined him a hundred yards from home, and drew out to win by nearly two lengths, with Jazolock four lengths off third, then Hoon Hay, Desborough and Moor Chimes well back. The winner is a son of Author Dillon and Lady Jinks, and is a very smart three-year-old gelding, trained by T. Wallis, Timaru. He was ridden a well-judged race, and won with little to spare in fast time. The first three winners on the card numbered fourteen. Mountain Chimes paced a very solid race, but had not the speed of the winner over the last half furlong. The Southlander, Great Bell, was elected first fancy for the Innovation Handicap, carrying seven chances more than Katute (J. Bryce), with Sebisca about four hundred supporters off in third place. Kerrwood Bel! was penalised 24 yards. Great Bell did not start too well, but soon settled down. Tim Wood began very badly. Avalanche drew’ out smartly, but Great Bell was always with her. The pair drew right away from the field at the far turn. The last time round, Great Bell ranged up to Avalanche and made him go fast. When the straight was reached Great Bell secured a slight advantage, to beat Avalanche cleverly by half a length, Randolph being about eighty yards away third in front of Merry Peter and Tamerlane. This made the second win at Forbury this season for Great Bell, or with successes at Winton and Gore, four events on end. The daughter of Great Audubon—Myrtle Bell, who was bred at Riversdale by her owner, T. McMath, was capably handled by J. McLennan, who has thus piloted her four times successfully. Avalanche for the first time in many months raced without a break throughout.

The coupled Fight Ever and Native Chief were made a warm first fancy for the Prince of Wales Handicap, carrying about eleven hundred and fifty chances more than the coupled Trenand and Queen’s Own, with Macaranda about seven hundred and fifty supporters off in third place, but there was a good following for Bessie Logan, Shine Soon and St. Maura. At the start Event misbehaved and lost his chances. Over the first two laps Harry Audubon was always in front from Bessie Logan in a close running field which was trailed by Downcast. Before entering the last lap, Bessie Logan paced to the front. Going into the back stretch for the last time, Native Chief moved into second place, to take command at the far turn. At the final bend Native Chief just led Bessie Logan, Queen’s Own and Fight Ever. In the run home for a good finish Queen’s Own headed Native Chief, to beat Fight Ever by over a length, with Native Chief two lengths off third, then Bessie Logan close up, followed by Macaranda and Shine Soon. The winner, who was bred in Southland and is by Adonis —Country Queen, has been owned in Canterbury for several seasons by D. Spence, and was trained by O. Hooper. She was very cleverly driven by E. C. McDermott. Native Chief paced a fine race, but could not quite see the distance out. The Australian bred Fight Ever outstayed his stallmate Native Chief over the last furlong.

The back marker Money Spider was the first selection for the St. Clair Handicap, carrying about four hundred and twentychances more than Trampfast, who was about seventy chances ahead of Pete Peter. Despite a tangle at the start, the second fancy drew out quickly. It was a case of Trampfast first and the rest nowhere, as

he led throughout, to nearly walk past the judge first by about forty yards from Engagement, who beat Money Spider by two lengths with Blue Thorpe close up, fourth. The winner is a very fine square trotter, but an uncertain performer. For the Renown Handicap, Desert Star led all the way, carrying about eight hundred and seventy chances more than Lingfield, with the coupled Rollicking Bells and Jolly Pete next in demand about two hundred and eighty supporters off. At the start Kibiringi, Lingfield and Okaura lost their chances, while Carbine Direct pulled up. Getting to the front smartly, Spring Note led Richore and Logan Hanlon almost throughout, with Desert Star and Mate 0’ Mine always handy. Spring Note led into the straight, but dropped back. Logan Hanlon stayed on, but Ariki was threequarters of a length off third, then Desert Star, Lenamhor and Spring Note. The Central 1 Otago representative won cleverly and deservedly, as he has raced unluckily for some time. Desert Star paced a fine race considering that he was badly placed owing to force of circumstances almost throughout, having to race on the outside of the field and cover a lot of unnecessary ground. The runner-up is a well-bred four-year-old gelding by Cathedral Chimes — Zara, trained by M. B. Edwards. Mate o’ Mine was well up in the last lap. Logan Holme was elected first fancy for the Flying Handicap carrying over one hundred and fifty chances more than Harold Thorpe, with General Bingen about six hundred and twenty-five supporters away next. Mountain Chimes led round to the back where Logan Holme took command, to lead into the home stretch. Pacing on strongly, Logan Holme beat Harold Thorpe neatly by half a length, with Mountain Chimes four lengths away third, then Some Wilkes and Desborough. When going well at the back, Harold Kerrwood and Harbour Light tangled and lost their chances. SECOND DAY ACCEPTANCES. (Per United Press Association.) Durtedin, May 5.
