LUMSDEN NOTES

GOLF CLUB MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) A meeting was held on Tuesday to consider the question of forming a golf club in Lumsden. There was a large atatendance and a good deal of enthusiasm was shown. Mr James Mangan was voted to the chair, and explained to those present the necessary procedure for the formation of the club. He stated that he had been approached by a number of residents who were willing and eager to form the club, and he saw no reason why the game should not become popular in the Lumsden district. Mr A. Heath had kindly offered the use of his property for the laying out of the links and all that was now needed was to form a strong committee and have the grounds attended to in order that members could commence playing as soon as possible. It was decided, on the motion of Mr F. Thomson, seconded by Dr Brown, that a club be formed and be known as the Lumsden Golf Club. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers was proceeded with and resulted as follows— President, Mr W. Hunter; vice-presidents, Messrs G. F. Johnson, W. Roxburgh, A. Heath, A. McAllister and J. Campbell; committee, Alessrs J. W. Hunter, J. A. Mangan, F. Thomson, Dr Brown, Mrs Hunter and Miss Johnson; secretary, Mr J. A. Mangan. The membership fee was fixed at £1 1/for men and 10/6 for ladies. The ground offered by Mr Heath had been inspected by Messrs Mangan, Thomson and Dr Brown, who reported that the area was admirably situated for a golf links. The matter of laying out the grounds was left in the hands of the secretary, who was authorised to secure the services of a professional from Invercargill if necessary. Twenty members were enrolled at the meeting, and it is expected that the number will be augmented by a large number of enthusiasts from the surrounding districts. A number of residents in the country signified their intention of joining the club, although unable to be present at the meeting. It was decided to hold the opening day about the end of the present month. The meeting decided to forward a letter of thanks to Mr Heath for the use of his property, which was so close to the township. The matter of obtaining suitable grounds had greatly assisted in hastening the formation of the club.

A further meeting of the club will be held after the grounds have been put in order. Before the meeting closed Mr Hunter moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr James Mangan for his information given that evening and for his efforts in arranging the meeting and arousing enthusiasm throughout the district. Mr Mangan briefly returned thanks, and stated that his services would be given willingly throughout the season and he would be pleased to assist the club in any way.
