(From Our Correspondent.) In the Stewart Hall on Monday a euchre tournament and dance Was held in aid of the Industrial Princess. There was a good attendance, the euchre being in charge of Messrs C. C. Henry and W. P. Thorn. At the. conclusion of play the winners were announced as follows: —Ladies’ first prize, Mrs W. Reid; booby, Miss Nan Taylor; gentlemen’s first prize, Mr L. McKelvie; booby, Mr H. Martin. After supper, provided by the ladies of the committee had been partaken of, dancing was indulged in to music supplied by Mr A. Duncan’s orchestra. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The Mataura School Committee’s monthly meeting was held on Tuesday, Mr J. W. Aitken (acting chairman) presiding. The head teacher reported that the average roll for the month was 329, the average attendance 298.8 and the percentage of attendance 90.8.
The Education Board advised authorised holidays for the year as follows: April 14 from mid-day to Easter Tuesday, inclusive, Anzac Day, King’s Birthday, Labour Day, term holidays ten days beginning from May 9, and term holidays beginning from August 29, also three special days for local requirements, and 30 days at Christmas. —Received. The board approved of school being closed to enable teachers to attend the annual conference of the Southland branch of the Educational Institute to be held on Friday. —A holiday was granted. Mr W. Gee, Gore, wrote in reply to the committee’s letter in connection with the Dental Clinic at Gore, and it was decided to refer the letter to the incoming committee to deal with. The board advised the appointment of Mr Colin A. Corbett as substitute assistant until January 31, 1928. » The board advised the committee that it could obtain cheque forms on application free of cost.—Received. Advice was received from the Education Board advising that the incidental allowance of £2B, together with a special grant of £2 13/-, would be placed to the committee’s credit at the end of the quarter. Mr H. Williams wrote asking the committee to assist him in meeting the expenses incurred through his daughter receiving injuries which necessitated the removal of part of a finger on the occasion of the annual school excursion. The secretary was instructed to Write to Mr Williams conveying the committee’s sympathy, and stating that the committee had no money to help him with. Mr R. Haywood wrote quoting for a supply of firewood, and the matter was left in the secretary’s hands to deal with. Mr W. Leitch reported on the recent visit to Mataura of the Hon. Minister for Education. Mr L. McKelvie reported that along with Mr Leitch they had visited the school, and all that was required at the new school were some minor matters at the infant school. The secretary was instructed to •apply to the board for a supply of coat hooks for the infant school. The secretary said that Sister I. Y. Scott had donated a prize for the best essay on Anzac Day, and it was decided to thank Sister Scott for her action. The secretary’s action in procuring a case at a cost of £2 to be used as a school museum was approved. Accounts totalling £22 12/8 were passed
