CRICKET

SOUTHLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION. MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The weekly meeting of the executive was held last evening. There were present Mr R. Barnett (in the chair), Messrs N. Hendry, A. J. Deaker, N. Poole, N. Walsh, A. Hamilton, R .Dunbar, and P. Gilfedder (secretary). Apologies were received from Messrs J. S. McGrath and E. Cooke. As the result of a protest, the Marist third grade team was granted a three-point win against the Woodend team, who allegedly played two senior members in the match. Marist defeated Woodend but were only entitled to a two-point win. on the game.

A letter from Mr P. Dalrymple read as follows—“ The members of the Melbourne cricket team are very pleased with their trip to ‘Sunny Southland,’ and speak highly of the attention given to them in many ways by your association. Before leaving Christchurch Mr Trumble wished me, as your delegate, to thank the Southland Cricket Association, and the many cricket enthusiasts and supporters for the hospitality and kindness extended to himself and the team which made their all too short stay in Invercargill so enjoyable, and all regret that time did not permit to see more of the beauty spots in Southland. I am very pleased to inform you that, notwithstanding that Southland has no representative in the New Zealand cricket team (it is just a matter of time when they will), I have received over 100 applications for shares and promises for more in the ‘New Zealand Cricket, Ltd.’ This is indeed very gratifying to me to know that my old province has risen to the occasion and that you have in your midst such a number of staunch supporters of the good old game which augurs well for the advancement and success of cricket in Southland. As Mr Trumble remarked, ‘You have the grounds and pavilions, and the cricketers in the making. It is just a matter of sticking to it.’ ” The secretary reported that the Hockey Pavilion on Queen’s Park had been thoroughly cleaned prior to handing same over to the Southland Ladies’ Hockey Association. It was decided to close the senior competition, and the Invercargill Cricket Club were declared winners. The second grade competition will close next Saturday, when the Invercargill Club will play-off with the Union Club on the Biggar street ground. The third grade competition was declared closed, with the Invercargill Cricket Club winners.

Mr Hamilton gave notice of motion for next annual meeting that Rule 97 be amended. The present rule reads as follows: “Two days’ play shall be allowed for first grade matches and one day for all others. If two innings are not completed by each side after two days’ play, the match shall be decided on the first innings. In every case the first innings must be completed, and the match decided, at such time and at such place as the executive shall think fit, unless before a team has completed its first innings it has scored more runs than the opposing team had scored at the completion of the latter team’s first innings.” The proposed amendment reads: “Two days’ play shall be allowed for first grade matches, and one day for all others. If two innings are not completed by each side after two days’ play, the match shall be decided on the first innings. If the first innings of a match be uncompleted, a draw shall count and both sides be awarded one point.”
