RUGBY FOOTBALL

SOUTHLAND UNION MEETING OF EXECUTIVE SUB-UNIONS IN ATTENDANCE The weekly meeting of the Southland Rugby Football Union was held last evening, when representative's of the various SubUnions attended, it being the first meeting of the month which enables country delegates to take part in the meeting. Mr A. H. Courtis (president) presided and the following were also present:—Messrs D. K. Torrance, T. McCarroll, P. Donnelly, A. J. Geddes, P. Shaw, P. Rice, W. Robison, W. Duncan, A. H. Stott, W. Ba."rd, C. A. Davis, R. S. Green (Eastern), C. H. Weir (Edendale), R. Robertson (Wyndham), Brown (Southern), King (Central) and Belsham (Northern).

The chairman extended a hearty welcome to the visiting delegates and also to Mr W. Baird, the Referees’ Association representative on the executive.

A ruling on a by-law in the Eastern District Sub-Union’s constitution, whether the secretary was entitled to a vote or not, was given. The executive held that according to the by-law the secretary was not a paid official and as the executive included the secretary as a member of such, he was entitled to vote. A recommendation was made that, the by-law be altered so as to read “hon. secretary.”

Neil R. M. Rein, hon. secretary of the Invercargill Football Club, wrote applying for permission for Rugby Park on April 9 on the occasion of a match with his club’s first fifteen and the Lumsden first fifteen. Permission was also desired to allow of a charge for admission—the Union to pay the cost of advertising the match and take 50 per cent, of the gate money, handing the other 50 per cent, over to the Invercargill Club to help pay the cost of entertaining the Lumsden footballers. —Decided to grant the permit and make a charge of 6d admission.

G. Oughton, secretary Star Football Club, wrote asking for permission for his club’s first fifteen to travel to Drummond on April 9 to play a match with Central; also for permission to play Zingari-Rich-mond (Dunedinl at Queenstown at Easter. —Granted.

A Smith, secretary Makarewa Football Club, wrote advising the Union of his club’s decision to disband.—Received.

P. W. J. Cockrell, secretary Pirates Football Club, wrote asking for permission for his club’s senior team to play Mataura at Mataura on April 9 and Kaikorai at Dunedin on April 16.—Granted. TRAINING NIGHTS. The following training nights at Rugby Park have been allotted to the various clubs:—Pirates and Star—Tuesdays and Thursdays; Marist and Blues—Mondays and Wednesdays. The training nights commence on April 4 and will be changed each month. Hours—7 to 9 p.m. W. Johnston, secretary Northern District Sub-Union, wrote entering a challenge for the Sports Protection Banner.—Referred to Eastern Sub-Union, the holders. MOSSBURN FOOTBALL CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Mossburn Football Cub was held in the Public Hall on Saturday night. The attendance was rather disappointing but the club has reason to feel proud of its financial position and the enthusiam shown by members argurs well for the coming sea-

The team was fairly successful during the past season, winning more than half their matches, though unsuccessful in the competition. The balance sheet as read was adopted, the sum of £55 being to the club’s credit. The following office-bearers were elected:—President: C. G. McCauley (re-elected) ; secretary: D. Bourke (re-elected) ; Club Captain: P. Mcßride; club committee: P. Mcßride, J. Newman, G. Christie, W. Young, E. Turner, W. Blatch, C. Dore. It was decided to enter a second grade team in the Northern District competition.

Thanks are due to Messrs McCauley and Reid who are donating medals for the best back and forward in the team for the incoming season.

As the Saturday night dances were such a success during the past, season it was decided to continue them again this winter. The proceeds from this source amounted to £32 last season.

It was decided to try and arrange matches with the Key on the 23rd and Limehills on April 30. The next meeting is to be held on Wednesday, April 13.
